日本語母語話者が発音を勘違いしやすい単語として、onionとLondonが挙げられます。どちらの語も最初の母音はcutのuと同じ音なんですが、日本語では「オニオン」、「ロンドン」なのでそれに引っ張られてaunion、Laundonと発音してしまう人が多いです。cutのuのように発音されるoをもつ単語は割と多く、下の例のようによく使われるものが多いです：
